проф. Ада Рапопорт-Альберт

The Ukrainian Association for Jewish Studies was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Professor Ada Rapoport-Albert, a well known researcher of Hasidism, Jewish mysticism, and gender history, who left us on the 18th of June 2020, 10 days before her 75th birthday.

The Israeli scholar was born in 1945, before the independence of Jewish state in Palestine was declared, but she spent most of her life in Great Britain. She became a professor at the University College London and head of its Department of Hebrew and Jewish Studies.

Prof. Rapoport-Albert also cared about the academic matters in Ukraine. For many years she willingly gave advice to her colleagues in Ukraine, helped to develop the Ukrainian journal of Jewish Studies, Judaica Ukrainica, and was a member of its editorial board. She also planned to take part in the UAJS international conference " 'Revealing of Secrets': Hasidism and Haskalah in the Ukrainian Lands" in autumn 2020.

On behalf of UAJS administration and academic board, UAJS President Dr. Vitaly Chernoivanenko conveys deepest sympathy to the relatives of Ada Rapoport-Albert and to her colleagues from the University College London.

Zikhrona livrakha. May her memory be blessed.
